CONTEST RULES
1. This contest is open to anyone regardless of color, national origin, religious
belief, or age and will run biennially.
2. The composer’s name MAY NOT appear on the score, parts, or CD. Any entry
received with the composer’s name on the package, score, parts or CD
will not be accepted for evaluation. A sealed envelope containing the completed
entry
form should be fastened securely to the inside cover of the CD case. The
envelope and CD should be identified by title only.
3. Each composer may enter only one piece per contest cycle.
4. Entry must be the original concert band work of the composer that has been
composed since June 1, 2011.
5. There are no restrictions as to style, form, or length, however it is expected
that the work be of a grade II or III level and accessible to young bands. Alfred’s
Young Symphonic Band Series instrumentation and range guidelines have
been provided for your reference.
6. Entries must be submitted with a FULL SCORE (pdf), a full set of legible
parts (pdf), and a recording of good quality (mp3) of the specified instrumentation
indicated in the score. Synthesized recordings are acceptable. All files should
be submitted on a single compact disc (title-score.pdf, title-parts.pdf,
and title.mp3). Please DO NOT disable printing on the pdf files.
7. Entrants are advised to send all entries by registered or insured mail.
8. Entries must be received by June 1, 2012.
9. After reviewing all of the contest submissions, the contest committee will
select up to 5 compositions as finalists. The finalist compositions will then
be piloted by select middle school ensembles. Feedback from the selected middle
school band directors and their students will be used to assist the contest
committee in selecting a winner.
10. The decision of the contest committee will be final and no correspondence
may be entered into regarding the award. Should the committee consider none
of the submitted compositions to be meritorious, a “no prize” decision
will be rendered.
11. The winning composition will be published in Alfred Music Publishing’s
premier Young Symphonic Band Series as part of their 2013 catalog.
It is expected that the winning composer be willing to work with Alfred if
edits are deemed
necessary.
12. The winning composer will receive a $2000 advance on future royalties
once the composition is released for sale. When enough copies of the piece
are sold
to cover the advance, the composer will receive Alfred’s standard royalty
rate.
13. The winner will be announced at the NBA General Membership Meeting at
the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in late December and posted on the NBA website.
An
article announcing the winning composition will appear in the National Band
Association’s
NBA Journal. The final decision is expected to be made no later than Nov.
15, 2012.
14. Materials will not be returned.
15. Composers should send their entries and direct inquiries to the chair of
the committee:
