The 2015 National Band Association/William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Contest Selection Committee met on Wednesday, December 16. In our deliberations two pieces emerged as the strongest in one of the best group of finalists we have had in a very long time. Because the committee felt that the two pieces both deserved to win it was decided to declare co-winners in this year’s contest. Therefore, this year’s winners are:
John Mackey “Wine-Dark Sea: Symphony for Band” (www.ostimusic.com/bio)
Paul Dooley “Masks and Machines” (www.pauldooley.net/bio)
Both pieces are available from the composers. Later this spring there will be articles in the NBA Journal that offer further information regarding these two fine compositions.
We would like to thank the Jupiter Corporation for generously providing the prize for this contest.
While John Mackey’s music for winds has become a staple of the repertoire, Paul Dooley is a relatively newcomer to our medium.
We congratulate both composers for their significant contributions to our medium and know they will continue to make great contributions to wind repertoire in the future.
